Tourism began in the county long before Greers Ferry Lake and even before it became a county with its “famous health resort of Sugar Loaf Springs.” With tourism came the Missouri and North Arkansas Railroad in 1908, which quickly became the center of attention.

The railroad opened markets for timber, livestock and produce.

The biggest change in Cleburne County began in the 1930s with plans for a dam on the Little Red River. Construction started in 1959 and Greers Ferry Dam was completed in 1962.
